Safe Haven Book Review
Since I have been reading
Nicholas Sparks’ books for quite sometime, I know what to expect from his book,
when I pick it – A soft intriguing love story, with the hero and heroines as
benign as they ever can be, blissful times disrupted into gloomy days just to
end on the fact that love emerges as the winner in spite of all circumstances. This book “Safe Haven” not an exception to the norm, has it all
but in addition, this book is spiced up with mystery and suspense.
It starts with the
mysterious Katie who arrives in Southport, to lead a secretive life, trying to
wipe out her dark past. She works as a waitress and stays aloof forming a wall
around her but only until two people – one Alex, a store owner, who lost his
wife and has two children and a single neighbour – Jo, enter her life. Katie
feels happiness – fear – uncertainty – sorrow – anxious, all at the same time. Alex
is extremely understanding and caring and she likes his kids too. But will her
past allow her to move on to a new life that she wishes for? As she doubts,
it’s her neighbour Jo, who removes her qualms and Katie comes out of her shell,
to experience happiness. She trusts Alex and finds content on the fact that Alex’s
love for her would not change, despite her past and no matter what. With Alex’s
assurance and affection, she grows stronger, day-by-day. Like she had always feared,
her past strikes upon her one day, leading to turmoil. As they come out of the
chaos, and as the past dies out forever, Sparks has another suspense for the
readers – “Who is Jo?”
“Safe Haven”, a well
knitted tale of love and mystery, makes an interesting read. The true-to-life
narration is the signature style of Nicholas Sparks, be it of Katie’s miserable
past life and her fears or of the delicate love between Alex and Katie or of
Kevin’s character and his justifications for himself. He preserves the nobility
and integrity of the characters – Alex and Katie. This book conveys several
subtle messages – like one cannot march ahead until the past is completely closed
out else it daunts forever, trusting people may not be easy but content and
happiness stems only from trust and Love makes possible the impossible.
