Just a “Cup of Coffee”!

The brown caffeinated drink has become a necessity in life for many. And for some, it is a matter of boasting to have an expensive cup of the bitter drink at CCD. Some like it hot, some like it cold and some like it not. Some believe the more expensive – the more tasty coffee. Some seem to be on the ever growing quest for that “perfect” cup of coffee. Some aren’t too much concerned about the tags attached, just the name “coffee” would do for them.

Some Coffee facts:

  • *      Coffee originated in Ethiopia when the shepherds noticed their sheep frisk and dance after eating the coffee beans
  • *      Coffee is actually the seed of the fruit called coffee bean, dried-roasted-grinded and brewed
  • *      Caffeine in coffee, is believed to relieve pain and reduce stress
  • *      Coffee contains plant phenols, chlorogenic acids and quinides, which function as antioxidants.
  • *      Coffee delays ageing by strengthening the ageing muscles
  • *      Studies say java drinkers live longer
  • *      About 70-80% of coffee consumed is Arabica and the rest is Robusta
  • *      Arabica and Robusta are the two main types of coffee – Arabica is mild and aromatic while Robusta is more bitter with 50% more caffeine

Coffee Commercial:

  • *      Global Coffee harvest to rise 8.1 per cent to 146 million bags from an estimated 135 million bags in 2012-13
  • *      Coffee provides a livelihood for 100 million people in coffee-producing countries, in addition to the farmers
  • *      Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia are the top three coffee exporting countries while USA, Germany and Japan are the top three importers of coffee
  • *      Contributing a third of the world’s total coffee consumption, Brazil proudly retains the World’s Largest Coffee producer title for more than 150 years now
  • *      Columbia stands second producing about two thirds of Brazil’s production
  • *      Coffee shops make up the ‘fastest growing’ part of the restaurant business, checking in with a 7% annual growth rate
  • *      Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day ie., 146 billion cups a year making USA the ‘leading coffee consumer’ in the world,  followed by Germany and Japan
  • *      Coffee is the most traded commodity in the world next only to Crude Oil. One might be surprised to know that Coffee overtook even Gold, Silver and Natural Gas here
  • *      With more than 15,000 stores in 50 countries, Starbucks Corporation, based in Seattle - Washington, is the largest coffee company in the world

Coffee India:

  • *      India is the seventh largest producer of coffee in the world – a slip by one step from sixth largest in 2011
  • *      India exports coffee to Italy, Germany and Russia among others
  • *      India exports two types of coffees – the one grown in India and the one imported-refined-processed and re-exported
  • *      Starbucks coffee joined hands with the TATAs to form a 50:50 joint venture company called Tata Starbucks Ltd and now Starbucks coffee is locally sourced and brewed in India
