Book Review: LOVE STORY by Erich Segal

“Short and cute” is what I would say about the book, if I were to put it in a single phrase.

There are books which feed your mind. Also, there are books which touch your heart.
“Love Story” is among the latter ones. It is a nice short love story well written by Erich Segal; A very short book indeed. It moves with humor and ends giving the reader tears in his/her eyes.

The story is about two young students – Oliver Barret IV and Jenny Cavilleri. They stand like Arctic and Antarctic Poles – I mean they come from such contrasting backgrounds. Oliver from the royal Barret family from whom his father has expectations to live upto the standards of the Barret family. But Oliver seems not to like his dad and his ways. He refuses to take his help and believes his father has no emotions. Whereas Jenny comes from a mediocre family but is extremely close and attached to her father.

As opposites attract, these two people fall in love, after some initial bullying of Oliver by Jenny. They plan to get married. Oliver gives up his family as his father is against his wish and Jenny gives up her career. The two are happily married though they could hardly make the ends meet. Oliver continues his law graduation in college and works part time and Jenny works as a teacher and takes care of the household chores.

Their hard work pays and Oliver becomes a lawyer in a good law firm. Their lives are getting happy. Wishing to have a baby, they go through medical check ups, but as fate would have it, Jenny is diagnosed with cancer and Oliver is the first one to know it. With pain, he silently suffers and hides it from her, and tries to keep her happy. He gets financial aid from his dad and gives her the best treatments.

Finally Jenny gets to know. And one day her life ends abruptly. Oliver’s dad somehow gets to know about it and comes to meet Oliver. The story ends with the reunion of father and son and a tagline “Love means never having to say you’re sorry”.

This story stands as an ode to love and pure relationships. It shows love as a blissful relationship, that love is in endurance, that one takes the pain to give happiness to the other….
